About Maryam Akhtar

Courage.

I understand that reaching out is the hardest part and takes the most courage but remember without this step you can’t move towards living your life how you actually want.

I would love to aid you on your journey and help you create the change you want.

If you are ready to start your journey, then here’s what it will be like working with me.

You may have heard that getting started on your struggle in therapy takes sessions upon sessions.

That’s not the approach I take.

My aim from the very first session is to discuss your needs and expectations, so we can talk about what that can look like in practice- helping us see light at the end of the tunnel.

We go at your pace as there is no ‘perfect pre-determined pace’ as we are all individuals and have our own individual needs.

We hone in on the root cause of why you are feeling stuck and why it is difficult to ‘just handle it’.

By helping you build focus and let go of some of the negative thoughts such as ‘Things will never change’ or ‘Is there any hope for me?’-you can gain a new outlook to life; free from the constant struggle of anxiety.

This is just the start for us, I will then guide you on how to actively change and create alternatives in our belief system that move you towards the life that seems ‘out of reach’.

The better you feel emotionally and mentally, the more things you can manage in life that seem overwhelming at this point, the more confidence you have in your ability to deal with further difficulties in your life.

But it all starts with taking that first step.

What does therapy actually look like?

First, we’ll have our consultation call to determine that we are the right fit to work together. I’ll ask you about why you’ve chosen to reach out at this time, what your challenges are and what your goals are for therapy.

From there we'll have our first session, in which we’ll dive in and understand what’s making you feel stuck- understand your triggers. We’ll look at not just the current impact, but also possible past events that could have/are contributing to our struggle.

I like to take a collaborative approach when working with you. I believe that I may know a thing or two about therapy, but you are the expert of your own experience so it’s important to work together to see exactly what has brought you here.

This process in and of itself can be quite enlightening as you can start to see the patterns and look at your past and possible future in a totally new way. You start to see why you have certain thoughts and behaviours you can’t seem to stop. You start to believe that they will not be this way forever.

My aim is to give you the skills and knowledge by the end of our therapy to help you ‘help yourself’ so that you feel confident in your ability to do this after our work too. I don’t work with people for years if it’s not needed.

Once we’ve identified these areas that aren’t helping you live the life you want, then we get to work letting go of them, working collaboratively using a guided process that helps you create alternatives.

Does it take work? Absolutely.

Is it easy? I would not be honest if I said that it is, but what I can say is that with the right guide and with your reason for the need to change strong- it can start to feel like that. This will include being pushed where you may not want to be pushed and doing things that might be ‘uncomfortable/stressful’ at first.

Is it worth it? Yes, it can be one of the best investments you ever make in yourself.

What do I use to help you make the transformation happen?

I work using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) primarily as well as Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) and further techniques from other third wave therapies. To help make the transformation you desire a reality for you.

I only use knowledge and therapies that have been scientifically evidenced to be effective at helping people change how they experience life quickly.

And that’s my priority, to help you achieve the transformation you desire.

Wondering whether now is the right time for therapy?

This is an important question to answer for yourself for sure.

Simply put, ask yourself this...are you ready to start experiencing life differently from now?

This isn’t a small change, this is about drastically changing the way you go through life in every area. It does mean being invested in doing all that is required to help you towards that life too.

So if you think that time is now, then I’m ready to help you make it happen.

About Me

How I got started in therapy…

Well the journey wasn’t too different from where you may be now. In my early twenties my life became completely imbalanced with work overtaking every areas of my life and it took a very long time for me to realise this was burning me out and I could not carry on living the same way.

I wasn't enjoying life, I was irritated constantly, drained physically, I had no time for my loved ones, and I was simply unhappy with my day to day experience. So I reached out to a therapist and not only did therapy help drastically transform how I experience things but I got another benefit...a career path!

Since then I decided that I wanted to help change people’s lives in a meaningful way too so I became a therapist myself!

My background experience

  • BSc (Hons) Psychology
  • PG Diploma in CYP CBT
  • Accreditation with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)
  • Further training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) with proven success in safeguarding and promoting welfare of vulnerable children, adolescents and adults. I have numerous years of experience working within a range of NHS mental health services in the UK with individuals from multi-cultural backgrounds, giving me the ability to be culturally sensitive and understanding.

Through my experience, I have acquired the fundamental knowledge and skills required to deliver a range of discrete evidence-based interventions with children, adolescents and adults, based on established principles and techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

What do I do when I’m not doing therapy?

In my free time, you might find me eating out at restaurants, shopping and reading thriller novels. I also love spending time with my friends and family, particularly my little niece. And oh! I am learning my 5th language- Korean so you may find me with my nose in a language book too!

Taking the first step

I know it can feel like you are stuck as you have to make an important decision right now, I've been there as well so I can empathise. But if you’ve read over this, if you’ve found that you could relate to it, then I’d highly recommend you reach out for therapy.

Even if not me then with another therapist.

Getting your mind back to the right state can be the most important thing you do in your life, as it completely changes how you experience every part of your life. As our mental health is what determines how we interact with people, what we are like at work, whether we enjoy things, whether we say yes or no to opportunities in life.

And I’d be happy to help guide you through it.

You can book a time to chat with me below and I can’t wait to start working with you.
