Find Someone Who Actually Understands

HESITATION. DOUBT. RETHINKING WHAT YOU WANTED TO SAY.

There’s something that you want to say but worrying about whether your therapist will actually understand what you mean…worried your perspective might not be understood or accepted by your therapist….you just can’t say what you want no matter how many times you try.

The constant feeling that you are beating on a wall, like you are not being understood and your point is going over the therapist’s head. The constant need to review and reword what you wanted to say about it or else something terrible will happen.

No matter how much you try to explain things, it’s just not working out as you need.

You have finally convinced yourself to seek help, but it seems like you it may not be worth it as you are not being understood anyway.  Now it seems like you are at the end of your tether.

YOU MAY HAVE HAD THOUGHTS LIKE...

  • “Why can’t the therapist understand what I mean?”
  • “Therapist doesn’t seem to understand my background well”
  • “Am I just not making sense?”
  • “That advice wouldn’t work well for me, if my therapist only understood my culture well”

If you are feeling this way while seeking help, then it can feel so disheartening and exhausting. Like you simply gathered up all that courage to seek help to now be stuck where you and your individual needs are not being understood well. It’s simply difficult to carry on this way.

You know that you want to change things and feel better but just don’t know how to find someone who can also understand all the other things that are important and part of your struggle. If things continue as they are, you are unable to live the kind of life you want. Life that is free of the constant struggle and overwhelm, low mood or hopelessness which is preventing you from actually enjoying life.

It might not feel like it right now but if you take the needed action combined with a culturally sensitive therapist then you can be on your way to that life that you desire.

Life can be completely different from how things are right now, when you have the right guide and advice.

WHY DO WE NEED A CULTURALLY SENSITIVE THERAPIST?

Interventions can only be effective in therapy when race, ethnicity, and culture that impact’s an individual’s identify and life circumstances are understood properly.

Not every therapist despite being competent in their skills can be culturally competent as they may not be able to consider all aspects of an individuals personal beliefs, cultural or attitudes when providing therapy.

When we are not being understood as we need, we are unable to get the full benefit of therapy as it’s not tailored to all of our needs. This can really get in the way of our recovery, maintaining our current struggles.

I Am Here To Help...

Cultural Therapy helps to get to the bottom of what's really keeping you stuck, and figuring out how to actually create that life you desire while keeping in mind an individual’s attitudes and beliefs.

Whether its a struggle with things around people, being in a crowd, or not feeling clean enough, we help to get to the bottom of this.

By understanding what’s going on and keeping us stuck, we can actually then work towards that version of our life we want.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the approach used to help you because it is the golden standard for treating Anxiety (and Depression) with the absolute highest success rates. CBT is also considered a short-term action based approach, so you don’t have to worry about being in therapy forever.

We start with the belief that our emotions are driven by the way that you think and behave in a given situation. If you’re feeling anxious, you’re having related anxious thoughts, many of which aren’t true or based on realistic evaluations of your situation.

After learning to recognise your thinking patterns, you will learn to apply skills to modify those unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviours to change the way you feel.

Some of the Tools and Techniques you will learn:

  • Understanding what Anxiety/Depression looks like for you specifically
  • Recognising your thinking patterns and the impact on your emotions
  • Attention Refocusing to help with the overwhelming thoughts.
  • Changing Belief Systems
  • Teaching you how to let go of worries and solve problems.
  • Teaching relaxation and breathing techniques, particularly muscle Relaxation, to control Anxiety and the physical symptoms of tension.
  • Reframing Unhealthy thinking traps
  • Creating Behavioural changes together
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • (If needed) Create a plan to deal with thoughts of hurting yourself

WAKING UP WITH HOPE

At the end of your therapy, you’ll walk away with a stronger sense of confidence, feeling more assured and well-equipped to handle whatever life throws at you. You’ll have tools that you can continue using well beyond the end of therapy.

Once you have a therapist that understands you in your entirety and is culturally competent then you can actually enjoy your life the way you want.

Enjoy everyday without the constant dread or stress. You can actually enjoy time out with friends and family instead of finding excuses to avoid the situations due to your fear. Get time back that you normally would spend ‘getting things prepared’ for the anxiety provoking situations. Stop isolating from loved ones.
