DREAD. SICK FEELING IN YOUR STOMACH. CONSTANT CHECKING AND REVIEWING

There’s something that keeps you constantly worrying about things around you…worried you might catch something to make you ill or there’s just something not right about things….you just can’t put your finger on the why at times no matter how hard you try.

The constant feeling that something bad is about to happen and that horrible feeling never goes away. The constant need to do something about it or else something terrible will happen.

No matter how long you spend doing something about it, it just doesn't seem to be enough and may need rechecking too.

It feels like you start your day and end it constantly worried about all the people and things around you and all the things that you have to do get that sense of relief. Even getting out of your room or leaving the house can take a lot of time as there’s so much to check on before you can do anything else.

Now it seems like you are at the end of your tether.

YOU MAY HAVE HAD THOUGHTS LIKE...

  • “What if I've left the cooker / iron on?”
  • “What if I catch something?”
  • “I'm dirty / contaminated I'm going to become ill / cause others to become ill”
  • “It'll be my fault if I don't do something (to avert danger)’.
  • “I won't be able to cope unless I get this place straightened out.”
  • “I'm a terrible person to think this way”
  • “My whole day is spent checking that nothing will go wrong in the house”

If you are feeling this way daily, then it can feel so overwhelming and exhausting. Like you are simply drained of any energy from being ‘constantly on’ worrying about everything, and it’s simply difficult to carry on this way.

You know that you want to change things and feel better but just don’t know how. If things continue as they are, you are unable to live the kind of life you want. Life that is free of the constant dread and worry, or constantly needing to do the same things over and over to keep the ‘danger away’ which is preventing you from actually enjoying life.

It might not feel like it right now but if you take the needed action then you can be on your way to that life that you desire.

Life can be completely different from how things are right now, when you have the right guide and advice.

WHAT IS OCD? WHY DO YOU FEEL SO ANXIOUS?

Alot of us have habits and superstitions that we do to avoid misfortune. For example, 'touch wood' to fend off bad luck. Obsessions and compulsions are essentially a more extreme form of this.

It is when people begin spending large periods of time every day performing behaviours aimed at minimising danger.

O in OCD is for Obsession which describes us experiencing unwanted thoughts, impulses, or images that are difficult to control. E.g.: Forgetting to do something (e.g. locking the door or turning off the cooker) Being contaminated by germs or A need for orderliness (e.g. everything must be in its correct place) to name a few.

These obsessions are naturally anxiety provoking and are often followed by time consuming rituals which attempt to neutralise the discomfort they cause.

Rituals are referred to as compulsions. E.g.: Checking that you have performed tasks properly e.g. locked the door, washing yourself thoroughly, or counting items.

When we are experiencing our day like this, living with these fears, our body responds accordingly by entering a state of survival called fight or flight. We may not even be aware of this happening and even turning this off can be very difficult, leading to our current struggles with constant dread.

I Am Here To Help...

Therapy helps to get to the bottom of what's really keeping you stuck, and figuring out how to actually create that life you desire.

Whether its a struggle with things around people, being in a crowd, or not feeling clean enough, we help to get to the bottom of the anxiety.

By understanding what’s going on and keeping us stuck, we can actually then work towards that version of our life we want.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the approach used to help you because it is the golden standard for treating OCD with the absolute highest success rates. CBT is also considered a short-term action based approach, so you don’t have to worry about being in therapy forever.

We start with the belief that anxious feelings are driven by the way that you think and behave in an anxious situation. If you’re feeling anxious, you’re having related anxious thoughts, many of which aren’t true or based on realistic evaluations of your situation.

After learning to recognise your thinking patterns, you will learn to apply skills to modify those unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviours to change the way you feel.

Some of the Tools and Techniques you will learn:

  • Understanding what OCD looks like for you specifically
  • Recognising your thinking patterns and the impact on your OCD
  • Attention Refocusing to help with the overwhelming anxious thoughts.
  • Changing Belief Systems
  • Teaching you how to let go of worries and solve problems.
  • Teaching relaxation and breathing techniques, particularly muscle Relaxation, to control Anxiety and the physical symptoms of tension.
  • Reframing Unhealthy thinking traps
  • Creating Behavioural changes together
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • (If needed) Create a plan to deal with thoughts of hurting yourself

WAKING UP WITHOUT WORRY

At the end of your OCD Management Treatment, you’ll walk away with a stronger sense of confidence, feeling more assured and well-equipped to handle whatever life throws at you. You’ll have tools that you can continue using well beyond the end of therapy.

Some stress is inevitable, but you don’t need to feel Anxious to the extent of being overwhelmed every day and avoiding situations that you currently struggle with.

Enjoy everyday without the constant dread or stress. You can actually enjoy time out with friends and family instead of finding excuses to avoid the situations due to your fear. Get time back that you normally would spend ‘getting things prepared’ for the anxiety provoking situations.
